It’s Wednesday, and Muslims are offended again. This time, the object of their ire is a new advertisment for the Tayside (that’s in Scotland) police force which advertises the service’s new phone number for “non-emergency” calls.

The advert in question, pictured below, features a cute little puppy sitting in a policeman’s hat. And owing to the fact that dogs are considered unclean in Islam, this postcard advert “has sparked outrage from Muslims.”

The advert has upset Muslims because dogs are considered ritually unclean and has sparked such anger that some shopkeepers in Dundee have refused to display the advert.

Strangely, I’ve not heard any news of Muslim outrage over the blatant discrimination and oppression of women that is evident in e.g. the following:

(for reference: that’s a picture of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the woman who is apparently his wife — Iran’s “First Lady”, so to speak)

Also lacking: Muslim outrage over e.g. the honour killing of Aqsa Parvez and other daughters of Muslim parents over essentially trivial matters (Aqsa herself was murdered for refusing to wear the Islamic headscarf, the hijab).

It’s bad enough that the Muslims complaining about this advert don’t have the presence of mind to realize that they are a minority group with no intrinsic right to force their views or beliefs on anyone else, let along on the society to which they have come. As Mark Shea points out, they just “can’t seem to get it through their infantile heads that the rest of us are not obliged to bother our heads about their particular cultural taboos.”

Dundee councillor Mohammed Asif said: ‘My concern was that it’s not welcomed by all communities, with the dog on the cards.

‘It was probably a waste of resources going to these communities.

‘They (the police) should have understood. Since then, the police have explained that it was an oversight on their part, and that if they’d seen it was going to cause upset they wouldn’t have done it.’

I usually give up alcohol for Lent, O Reader, and I usually try and observe the tradition of eating fish on Fridays during that time as well. A lot of Catholics do the same. How many of us, do you suppose, have ever expressed “outrage” that bars continue to feature happy hour specials and deals on steak sandwiches on Friday evenings? Yeah…didn’t think so. And while I’ve heard more than a few hilarious jokes from Jews about the impact of eating pork on one’s mental prowess, how many Jews do you suppose have ever expressed outrage over seeing coupons for bacon in the flyers that get delivered to their houses on a weekly basis?

But evidently, Muslims in and around Tayside evidently are not familiar with the concept of maturity in faith.

And the police are apologizing for this? Where’s that Scotch spirit? Where’s that Celtic fire? Where is someone — anyone — with the courage to say to Mr. Asif and all the others who have filed complaints about this advert: “This is Scotland. Sod off and deal with it. The advert stands, your grubby traditions be damned.”

Update: There is hope!

Mr Asif’s comments have won little support among the public or Dundee’s Islamic community.

Last night Mahmud Sarwar, trustee of the Scottish Islamic and Cultural Centre and the Dura Street mosque, appealed for calm.

He said he had no problems with the postcard and called on homeowners and local businesses to display them as it is in the public interest.

“I’ve not heard anything about that from members of the community,” Mr Sarwar said.

“I was round some shops today and at the mosque and nobody has said anything about it.”

Mr Sarwar said that religious sensitivities would prevent him from displaying the postcard on a building of religious significance but there was nothing to stop them being displayed in shops.

“There is not a dog—it is just a picture,” he said.

More like Mahmud Sawar, please!

Islamist blogger Shaukat Khawja really, really doesn’t like Jews — so much so, in fact, that he would rather that Theodor Herzl’s proposal that all Jews convert (or be converted) to Christianity had gone through back in its day.

Got that? A radical Muslim so hates the Jews that he would rather they had all been converted into infidel Christians, instead of being allowed to remain Jews.

And why?

Speaks Shaukat:

The history of the world would have been so peacefully different if the propsed mass Baptism of European Jewry had gone through.

Because clearly, Jews are responsible for all the wars of the world, right?

How much more true would Shaukat’s statement be, I wonder, were it modified to allow for the possibility that Muhammad had been killed in a tribal skirmish just prior to his first “visitation” from whatever demonic entity decided to temporarily assume the identity of Gabriel?

Update - the Meltdown: I seem to have touched a nerve, as Shaukat has now done two things. He had begun by demonstrating the maturity I have come to expect from him now, on par with that of a twelve-year-old casting angry aspersions from atop a playground. But following that up, he says a couple of…well, to be honest, his statements are gems in their own right.

For example:

Without going into Biblical treatment of Jews, which quotes contempt coming from Moses, Jesus, and St. Paul - I wonder why Jews were expelled from almost every European country — England topping the list — expulsion of Jews for almost 350 years. Could it be interpreted as a sign of Christians’ love or hatred towards Jews - and for what reasons???

Poor grammar aside, it is interesting that Shaukat chose to mention Moses — the man who, arguably, was the instrument by which God established the foundations of Judaism — as an example of one who has only demonstrated “contempt” for Jews. I suppose a narrow reading of, for example, the Book of Exodus could lead one to think that, since Moses does spend quite a bit of time castigating the Hebrew people for their sinfulness.

But then, the Hebrew people did sinful things in the desert, not the least of which was to build a golden calf and worship it. Humanity as a whole regularly sins, and periodically needs to be corrected, sometimes harshly. Certainly, Jesus and St. Paul both give example of this, as did Moses in his day.

Following Shaukat’s odd statement, though, is a list of dates in history that supposedly demonstrate Christian persecution of Jews. And, to be fair, many of the dates he lists do in fact accurately mention instances of persecution of Jews by Christian religious authorities. Other dates he lists, however, do not belong on the list.

And they’ve even launched their first research rocket. President Mahmoud “wipe Israel off the map” Ahmadinejad gave the launch order personally, evidently.

In other news, the Iranians continue work on their “civilian” nuclear program. They are also still ruled by Islamist fanatics.

Some Western experts have suggested Iran’s space program could be a cover to develop its ballistic missiles, at a time when the U.S. and others are accusing Tehran of trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Mr. President,

Six decades ago, in the aftermath of the Nazi horrors, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rene Cassin and other eminent figures gathered here, on the banks of Lake Geneva, to reaffirm the principle of human dignity. They created the Commission on Human Rights. Today, we ask: What has become of their noble dream?

In this session we see the answer. Faced with compelling reports from around the world of torture, persecution, and violence against women, what has the Council pronounced, and what has it decided?

Nothing. Its response has been silence. Its response has been indifference. Its response has been criminal.

One might say, in Harry Truman’s words, that this has become a Do-Nothing, Good-for-Nothing Council.

But that would be inaccurate. This Council has, after all, done something.

It has enacted one resolution after another condemning one single state: Israel. In eight pronouncements�and there will be three more this session — Hamas and Hezbollah have been granted impunity. The entire rest of the world — millions upon millions of victims, in 191 countries — continue to go ignored.

So yes, this Council is doing something. And the dictators who orchestrate this campaign will tell you it is a very good thing. That they seek to protect human rights, Palestinian rights.

So too, the racist murderers and rapists of Darfur women tell us they care about the rights of Palestinian women; the occupiers of Tibet care about the occupied; and the butchers of Muslims in Chechnya care about Muslims.

But do these self-proclaimed defenders truly care about Palestinian rights?

Let us consider the past few months. More than 130 Palestinians were killed by Palestinian forces. This is three times the combined total that were the pretext for calling special sessions against Israel in July and November. Yet the champions of Palestinian rights — [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad], Assad, Khaddafi, John Dugard — they say nothing. Little 3-year-old boy Salam Balousha and his two brothers were murdered in their car by Prime Minister Haniyeh�s troops. Why has this Council chosen silence?

Because Israel could not be blamed. Because, in truth, the despots who run this Council couldn�t care less about Palestinians, or about any human rights.

They seek to demonize Israeli democracy, to delegitimize the Jewish state, to scapegoat the Jewish people. They also seek something else: To distort and pervert the very language and idea of human rights.

You ask: What has become of the founders’ dream? Of Eleanor Roosevelt, of Rene Casssin, of John Humphrey, P.C. Chang, Charles Malik, who assembled here in Geneva sixty years ago? With terrible lies and moral inversion, it is being turned into a nightmare.

The preceding statement was declared inadmissable by the president of the UN Human Rights Council, Luis Alfonso de Alba. Its author, Hillel Neuer, was warned that any further statements of this nature would not be tolerated.

The UN has become the playgound of third-world dictators and international bullies, interested only in preserving their own grip on power and the condemnation of the one state in the whole of the Middle East that is a functional, stable, Western democracy where the people enjoy rights and freedoms unheard of anywhere else in the Middle East (or in most of Africa).
