I’ve Moved!

November 20, 2008

So I’m sure that most people have noticed that the site has been offline for a few days. There’s a reason for that, which I will get to shortly. But first, let me just say this:

I AM NO LONGER BLOGGING HERE

In fact, I am blogging at a new site I have just finished setting up: kennethhynek.net. A full explanation for the reasons behind the move can be found here.

That said, this is not the end of . My wife has expressed interest in taking over blogging at this domain, and I am working to make sure that she gets set up here as soon as possible.

Also, my profound apologies for the modification to the site face; the move was not as seamless as I would have hoped, and many of the image files for this theme, and in the gallery, were corrupted during the course of their evacuation from my previous web host’s servers. Until such time as I have repaired them, I’ve put a clean-looking template in place of the previous one.

Update: for the purposes of further traffic shaping, new posts from kennethhynek.net will be excerpted below. Full articles can be read at the new blog.

I seem to be doing photos lately. And it helps that there have been a few photo-worthy sunsets of late, I suppose.

This particular picture was composed from a 3-by-3 grid of photos, assembled in (Curse your precision, program! I will find your weakness yet!) and then cropped and adjusted in . I tried to bring out the buildings in the foreground as much as was possible, although this the results definitely fall short of what one could potentially achieve with . I’m just not ready to try HDR in a panoramic photo yet.

Here’s another , with a bit of a twist this time; the real panoramic view of the city is the slightly distorted, slightly warped reverse-angle visible in the windows; the actual city of appears properly only on the far right, and then only just.

Basically, I’m trying to contrive situations which cause to choke. As yet, I haven’t managed to do this.

I haven’t done a sunset in a while, and this particular beautiful sunset was a chance to play with again.

I am also quite pleased with ’s “Match Total Exposures” feature, which worked exactly as I hoped it would and ensured a nice, even gradient in the sky colour, from light on the left to dark on the right.

So I was browsing through this category of photos on , and decided that I wanted to have a go at creating my own “little planet” pictures. This is a first attempt, composed from a 6-shot I took of a keyboard in the office. It was stitched with , and then “polarized” in . Supposedly, I could have used to achieve the same effect, but I haven’t figured that part out yet.

The source file for this image is huge — on the order of 116 megapixels, if memory serves. The image is composed from 39 shots arranged in a 13×3 grid, and was stitched together with . There’s a bit more barrel distortion in the picture than I would normally accept, but I can’t fault the overall quality of the stitching — it is superior even to .

This is another image rendered with , which is becoming a valuable tool for me. It is of, I believe, a patch at the bottom of a valley.

This is a image stitched together using , from five source images (or was it six?). It’s the dining room at the bed-and-breakfast hotel pictured in yesterday’s picture, which has been done in a late 19th century style.
