Pic of the Day #617
I had been hoping that the clouds might give me a break and let the sunset on the eve of the party shine through — the harbour we were in offered a great view almost directly westward.
Sadly, it was not to be. Still, I managed to get an interesting picture out of it.
I’m also trying something new with this shot — from now on, only the picture will be featured on the main site; the text write-up will be “below the fold” (so to speak).
Anyhow, I do rather like this shot in spite of the fact that there’s no sunset in it (it was taken around that time of day, though). The water is fairly tranquil, so there are a number of reflections (even of many of the finer details, like the masts on the boats and some of the tree branches). There’s also a fair bit of contrast to the scene, including some very punchy transitions between dark and light areas (especially on the left).
Edit-wise, I didn’t do anything particularly special to this picture in Lightroom, apart from some heavier-than-average chromatic aberration reduction. However, in iPhoto, I used the “Fade Color” tool to desaturate the image just slightly. It’s not a straight desaturation, though; it seems to focus only on certain tonal ranges (applying it multiple times gave the image a very wintery feel, but — notably — didn’t really diminish the blue tarp over the one boat on the left to any meaningful extent).
