Making it even easier for girls to get access to contraception

Schoolgirls in Britain are being provided with ‘credit cards’ that they can present at pharmacies to wordlessly ask for morning-after contraception pills — in an effort to avoid the embarassment of having to ask for it.

Remember the days when that sort of shame was exactly the sort of thing we wanted to promote, because it was a part of a larger societal message against premarital sex?

I rather like RightGirl’s take on the whole issue: “if you’re too shy to talk about birth control, you’re too young to f*ck”. Which pretty much sums it up…if girls can’t face the stress of asking for over the counter contraceptives, why the hell are we not doing more to discourage them from engaging in sexual activity when they are obviously not emotionally ready for that, either?

Oh, yeah…they have rights.

Elephant in the room: the article mentions that these cards are called “modesty cards”. If a teenage girl needs a morning-after pill, chances are modesty isn’t one of her strong points anyhow, and in that case she’s not going to gain any back by use of an illustrative piece of plastic.
