I’ve Moved!

November 20, 2008

So I’m sure that most people have noticed that the site has been offline for a few days. There’s a reason for that, which I will get to shortly. But first, let me just say this:

I AM NO LONGER BLOGGING HERE

In fact, I am blogging at a new site I have just finished setting up: kennethhynek.net. A full explanation for the reasons behind the move can be found here.

That said, this is not the end of . My wife has expressed interest in taking over blogging at this domain, and I am working to make sure that she gets set up here as soon as possible.

Also, my profound apologies for the modification to the site face; the move was not as seamless as I would have hoped, and many of the image files for this theme, and in the gallery, were corrupted during the course of their evacuation from my previous web host’s servers. Until such time as I have repaired them, I’ve put a clean-looking template in place of the previous one.

Update: for the purposes of further traffic shaping, new posts from kennethhynek.net will be excerpted below. Full articles can be read at the new blog.

Pic of the Day #156

February 23, 2007

I was up way too late working on the slideshow: I punched “Burn” on iDVD (thus beginning the process of encoding the movie and DVD menus into one complete disc image) at about 3:20 AM, and was up for work at 6:30 AM. To say that I’m hurtin’ right now would be…pretty accurate, actually.

The banquet went well, the slideshow was well received*, and Colin, Jamie, and I had a blast singing our little ditty (Coney Island Baby, a classic “barbershop” tune) for the group during the Campfire portion of the evening**. We actually met to rehearse the song at Jamie’s mom’s house (a few blocks away from the Community League building where the banquet was held), which provided the opportunity to get today’s picture.

This is Naisnoir, Jamie’s mom’s cat. She’s a pretty social cat too, and an active little critter, so getting her to sit still long enough to get a shot off in the low light of Jamie’s basement was…well, pretty much a matter left to luck. But this one shot panned out nicely, I think.

I used the 50mm lens for this one (I needed the wide aperture in order to get any kind of decent shutter speed out of the camera), and had the ISO turned up to 1600. But that’s okay: there’s plenty of detail in the shot, and I like the way the cat really stands out from the background (an easy enough thing, given her colour).

Where was this taken?

* There was one major hangup with the audio-encode phase of the DVD render, which required me to actually stop the first image burn and manually encode the movie’s audio track into a single stereo stream in order to save time.  Then I had to re-burn the image, and that process completed just as Colin and I were leaving work to go to Jamie’s.

I’m glad I was able to pull that one out of the fire, but I think in the coming years I’m not going to tolerate any more last-minute content submissions to the slideshow.

** Campfire is basically a little sit-down at the end of the banquet where each section (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers) performs skits, songs, or jokes for the assembled audience.  It’s fun.
